About the session
The rapid demographic shift toward aging populations in the Global South presents both urgent challenges and transformative opportunities. As healthcare systems struggle to manage the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, frailty, and mental health issues among older adults, societies must also contend with the social, economic, and cultural implications of aging. Building resilience in the face of these changes requires a nuanced understanding of the complex needs of aging populations and the development of innovative, equitable, and sustainable strategies.
This panel will bring together global thought leaders from public health, civil society, academia, and the private sector to explore pressing questions about aging in the Global South. Panelists will examine emerging evidence and practical solutions, including strengthening primary care systems, integrating long-term care models, fostering intergenerational solidarity, and addressing social and geographic inequalities. The role of digital health, social innovations, and local governance will also be explored as key enablers for healthy aging in resource-constrained settings.
The panel will be structured around three interconnected themes: (1) Evidence and Data Gaps: what do we still need to understand about ageing in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs)? (2) Policy, Technological and Programmatic Innovations: what strategies have shown promise in improving health outcomes and social protection for older adults? and (3) Future Directions and Leadership: how can institutions and communities build adaptive capacity to ensure inclusive development in aging societies?
Through case studies, moderated dialogue, and audience engagement, the panel aims to generate actionable insights for global and national actors seeking to build resilient, age-inclusive societies in the 21st century.
